Hasselbacken Chess Open which was played in May 2016 became one of the world's biggest chess events that year. With 34 major champions, of which 17 players with rating numbers of 2600 became the strongest open tournament decided in Sweden - and the world's chess press followed the drama at the enchanting hotel in Stockholm.
Russian Grandmaster Dmitry Andreikin (2736) won barely before the Indian Adhiban (2663). Now on November 3-5, Hasselbacken Chess Open returns in a slightly changed form. From weekly tournament to weekend tournament, and as part of the Swedish Grand Prix.
The tournament will replace Scandic Ariadne Masters, but Scandic Ariadne will continue to be a player hotel. Players can also book a room at Scandic Hasselbacken.
In the Mirror Room there will be nearly 300 seat. Last year's GP tournament gathered 226 participants.
The Stockholm Chess League Chairman Jan Wikander looks forward to a nice GP competition at Hasselbacken.
"The Stockholm Chess Federation and Stockholm Chess Society had an excellent collaboration with the 150th anniversary of the spring of 2016 on Hasselbacken."
"We think the venue will gather a large number of participants this time too. A just-set five-year agreement with Scandic Hasselbacken will secure the GP competition in Stockholm for many years! Here we go!"
Ted Gemzell, chairman of the Stockholm Chess Company, is also looking forward to the tournament:
"Stockholm Chess Society is incredibly happy and proud to be able to follow the success - Hasselbacken Chess Open - as a GP competition.
"This means that we once again perform a good class chess event in a stunning setting at Djurgården in Stockholm. We sincerely welcome all chess friends!"
